Spain Emerges as Top Source of European Tourists to Panama in 2024

Panama City, Panama – January 7, 2025 – In a notable development for the tourism sector, Spain has solidified its position as the leading European source of tourists to Panama. According to recent data released by the Panama Tourism Authority (ATP), a total of 53,341 Spanish visitors traveled to Panama from January to September 2024, marking a 5.17% increase compared to the same timeframe in 2023.

Visitor Statistics on the Rise

The ATP’s report highlights that the initial half of the year experienced a significant rise in visitors to Panama. From January to June 2024, the country welcomed approximately 1.44 million international travelers, an 8.7% increase over the 1.33 million visitors recorded during the corresponding period in 2023. This represents an additional 115,245 visitors, reinforcing Panama’s growing appeal as a tourist destination in the region.

The substantial growth in tourism is also reflected in the financial benefits, with the country generating $3.08 billion in foreign exchange earnings during the first six months of the year, an increase of 10.3% from $2.80 billion in the previous year.

Increasing European Interest

The influx of European tourists has risen by 3.7%, with Spanish tourists constituting a significant portion of this growth. Following Spain, French nationals rank second among the European visitors, with Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands following suit. The robust tourism numbers from Europe can largely be attributed to Panama’s strategic geographic position as a bridge between continents, complemented by the key role of the Tocumen International Airport. This airport serves as a major hub in Latin America, responsible for receiving 74% of all international visitors to Panama; it is predicted to accommodate 18 million passengers by the end of 2024.

Investments in Sustainable Tourism

In alignment with its growing tourism industry, Panama has initiated the Sustainable Tourism Master Plan for 2020-2025. This program aims to establish the country as a global leader in sustainable tourism practices. The ATP has invested approximately $301.9 million over the last four years to improve tourism infrastructure and to empower local communities, ensuring economic growth is both equitable and sustainable.

Upcoming Promotion at FITUR

Panama is poised to present its tourism potential on an international stage at the upcoming International Tourism Fair (FITUR), which will take place from January 22 to 26, 2025, in Madrid, Spain. This participation underscores Panama’s thriving tourism industry and its ambition to become a key destination within the European market. The Panamanian delegation will occupy a space of over 260 square meters in Pavilion 3, showcasing their official representation through Visit Panama and LTN LATAM. The focus will be on promoting the country’s rich cultural, natural, and business attractions.

As the tourism sector continues to flourish, Panama stands ready to welcome more visitors from Spain and beyond, with a commitment to sustainable development and enriching the travel experience.
