Cultural Heritage Celebrated at Las Tablas Festival
In a vibrant celebration of Panamanian culture, the annual festival in Las Tablas is set to showcase the rich and diverse heritage of the region. According to Gloria de León, the head of the National Tourism Authority (ATP), the event significantly impacts not only Las Tablas but also extends to neighboring provinces such as Herrera, Coclé, and Veraguas. This weekend is anticipated to see hotel occupancy in the Azuero Peninsula reach its peak as visitors flock to enjoy the festivities.
Diverse Participation in the Parade
Over 100 delegations representing institutions, private businesses, and families will take part in the festival parade, which emphasizes the cultural variety within Panamanian communities. The organizing committee highlighted that each group will display traditional costumes that reflect the unique customs and heritage from different parts of the country.
In addition to the parade, a new highlight this year is the inauguration of the “Vereda Artesanal,” a space dedicated to entrepreneurship and gastronomy. This initiative aims to stimulate local commerce and provide a platform for local artisans and culinary offerings, contributing to the region’s economic growth.
Economic Impact of the Festival
Noé Herrera, the mayor of Las Tablas, noted that the festival generates significant economic benefits for the city, supporting both formal and informal businesses. The influx of tourists not only boosts sales during the celebrations but also helps sustain local enterprises year-round.
Alongside the Las Tablas festival, another prominent event occurring until January 19 is the Feria de las Flores y el Café in Boquete, located in the western province of Chiriquí. Tomás Ruiz, president of the fair’s patronage, announced that they expect around 190,000 visitors, projecting revenues exceeding half a million dollars solely from ticket sales. Remarkably, this year marks the 52nd edition of the fair, which has achieved international status for the first time.
Importance of Cultural Events
Ovidio Díaz, president of Panama’s Chamber of Tourism (Camtur), emphasized the crucial role cultural events play in promoting Panama’s tourist attractions and boosting the economy. He noted the need for strategies aimed at prolonging tourists’ stay in the country.
Díaz pointed out that many local fairs and festivals do not receive adequate promotion in advance, limiting their potential to attract international visitors. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening the nation’s tourism infrastructure, particularly in areas such as road access, basic services, transportation, and effective waste management services to ensure a satisfactory experience for tourists.
As Panama continues to celebrate its cultural heritage through events like the Las Tablas festival and the Feria de las Flores y el Café, efforts to enhance tourism infrastructure and strategic marketing will be essential for maximally leveraging these opportunities for economic growth.
